Context
More than 2,000 Salvadoran soldiers arrived between 22 and 29 October; El Salvador's president said on 29 October they would withdraw at once if the four technicians came back alive, but on 3 November Haiti's Prime Minister said the foreign forces "are here to support us" and came to "uproot gangs", with no duration. On 2 November Salvadoran armoured units carried out their first large ground operation in the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac and some residents protested their presence; in El Salvador, 68 of every 100 people surveyed want the contingent kept or increased (CID Gallup, 24–27 October).
